In an effort to enrich our programs program practices available to providers, After School Matters offers a number of free program modules made possible by the Wallace Foundation. These modules are intended to be used as self-guided supplemental materials for teen after-school programs.
A module is an educational tool on a number of subjects you can use in your After School Matters program to help guide teens towards healthy lifestyle choices.
Plan the time you will use to facilitate a module into the proposal you submit to After School Matters.
We encourage you to review the modules we are offering for the 2009-2010 school year:
LIFE, Inc.
LIFE, Inc.: The Ultimate Career Guide for Young People includes a student journal, teacher's guide, companion Web site and other valuable tools to help Chicago’s teens begin thinking about possible careers. The Deloitte Foundation and Neale Godfrey teamed up to make these resources available to our instructors and teens. This module helps instructors share with their apprentices how they got to be experts in their field. LIFE, Inc. illustrates to teens that now is the time to start thinking about the future.
Financial Literacy
Created in conjuction with Bank of America, the financial literacy workshop is designed to give our teens a foundation of what it means to be financially responsible. The workshop provides apprentices with the knowledge and resources of how to spend and save their money in the short and long term through fun activities and open discussion.
Nutrition
Created by Chicago Park District Fitness Division in collaboration with the Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children (CLOCC), these modules offer health activities that will help teach teens more about their health. There are ten activities to get teens talking about their own health and body image. The activities also address what it means to have a healthy diet through the 5-4-3-2-1 Go! Message: (5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, 4 servings of water a day, 3 servings of low-fat dairy a day, 2 or less hours of screen time a day, and 1 or more hours of physical activity a day)
