After School Matters offers many innovative program concepts that do not neatly fit into gallery37, science37, sports37, tech37, or words37.

The Algebra Project

In partnership with DePaul University, apprentices are trained as Math Literacy Workers and provide weekly math and technology-based workshops at Chicago Public Schools, Chicago Park Districts and Community-Based Organizations. Graduates of the program advance to become interns, where they assist in training apprentices to be Math Literacy Workers and to take the lead in coordinating weekly workshops as well as documenting and evaluating the process.

Project Green Thumb

Teens discover their green thumbs as they master the basics of horticulture and are exposed to a variety of green career options from greenhouse management to landscape architecture. This 10-week, hands-on training covers many important industry skills, such as growing plants from seed, practicing proper growing conditions and ensuring healthy crops.
