club37 - Year Book Club

The Tilden High School Year Book Club utilizes a broad array of communications skills to put together the school's yearbook. Teens are introduced to photography, journalism, editing and graphic design.

Pre-apprenticeship - Spoken Word

Spoken Word Pre-Apprentices learn how to make themselves heard by using their voices with strength, expression, confidence and creativity. The Pre-Apprenticeship concentrates on improving both written and oral communications skills, as well as critical workplace skills such as teamwork and critical thinking. Teens perform their work at a local coffee shop.

Apprenticeship - True Star Journalism

The computer labs at the South Shore Community Academy buzz with the sound of young journalists from Chicago's South Side where the True Star Journalism Apprenticeship gives teens a hands-on experience in print media. Teens write, edit, illustrate and design a newspaper complete with illustrations and interviews of celebrities such as R&B recording star Mario. Teens also welcome guest speakers in the field of journalism and take field trips to the Chicago Tribune and Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.

Internship

The Community Newspaper Internship allows teens who have training in the field of journalism to put their skills to work at a local newspaper. Interns work closely with members of the staff in a variety of areas, including the newspaper developer, website designer, newspaper layout specialist, advertising sales representative, administrative assistant and photo journalist.
