On June 20, the dismissal bell will ring throughout Chicago Public Schools for the last time until fall, and nearly 110,000 high school teens will start summer break. While summer is a time for our young people to have fun with friends, it is also unfortunately when violence historically soars, and when teens are more likely to be unsupervised and at risk of getting into trouble…or of trouble finding them. During 2016, Chicago suffered 764 homicides, half of which were African Americans between the ages of 15-24.
Because of the support of so many, last summer was the largest program session in our organization’s history, serving 10,500 teens. However, we received more than 24,000 applications. This year needs to be even bigger!
Our teens regularly show how much they want an opportunity to find their future, but the demand for our programs greatly exceeds capacity.
