The Youth For Change Program teaches teens to think critically about personal and community health by conducting walking surveys of their own neighborhoods! Their findings and recommendations are compiled into a final report which is presented to an Alderman/elected-officials in order to influence positive changes in their community.
Teen Pre-Apprentices are re-painting and updating a 2003 community mural currently displayed at Touhy Herbert Park on the Near West Side of Chicago. In addition, teens develop and paint a total of six original art mural panels (approximate size 4'x5') attached to the park's nearby fencing adjacent to Victor Herbert School's playground.
Teens have the opportunity to learn or enhance their skills on the history and current urban designs, learn how to invent and draw urban designs and create urban/hip-hop style t-shirts and jeans. Teen apprentices will also be instructed on writing about their urban line. They will create an urban design label, logo, and slogan. Teens have the opportunity to create a complete design which can be showcased in their portfolios and a fashion show.
Summer Science Crew teens integrate career development and exploration with educational, science-focused learning through a mixture of hands-on experimentation and teaching. The Summer Science Crew develops science workshops and experiments demonstrating their research findings to their peers and school age children.
In Nutrition Smart Media teens will learn about what media is, how it influences their dietary choices, and what good nutrition looks like. Participants will gain hands-on experience with food preparation and produce their own media eduation tools to promote healthy lifestyle and eating habits.
The Stand Up, Help Out program is an opportunity for teenagers to look into a variety of careers that will make a difference in the world, gain experience working with different groups of people in need, take field trips to explore different jobs and colleges, improve their academic skills, and work with role models and mentors.
The Spoken Word Academy trains teens for real world experiences to develop creative writing and performance skills into their own unique styles and techniques. Through hands-on, student directed activities, apprentices enhance their skills in writing, public speaking, teamwork, communication, and critical thinking.
The R.B.C. Summer Music Camp is a program for teens who have an interest in expressing themselves through music. Youth learn skills necessary to play various music instruments and participate in a musical ensemble.
