On October 13, teens in the After School Matters Jewelry Design Studio program visited Morningstar in their Downtown office for a resume writing and mock interview workshop, complete with an office tour of Morningstar’s space in the Loop. The teens had the opportunity to participate in a professional development workshop where they interacted with Morningstar staff and received great advice for their own professional development.
The team of professionals from Morningstar sat down with teens and held one-on-one mock interviews. “They asked us questions like, ‘What is your ideal workplace?'” said teen Myia, 17, of South Austin. The session then reconfigured into smaller teams of Morningstar professionals and After School Matters teens to facilitate group discussion and resume reviews.
Morningstar was thrilled to have the opportunity to interact with the 26 teens who visited. “The volunteers who participated in the project had a chance to pass along skills they have picked up in their careers and found it very fulfilling,” remarked Kristina Holme, project manager, research operations at Morningstar. “After School Matters students are motivated, curious and engaged.” The company was so impressed by the teens they recommended their Women’s Initiative (WIN) Philanthropy Committee select After School Matters programs to partner with for monthly events and activities in the future.
“I would love to work at a place like Morningstar with open spaces for collaboration with colleagues,” Myia remarked. “My favorite part of the tour was when they showed me a wall full of arrows and keywords, a map of the thoughts of the team working on the project.”
You can see a sample of the jewelry pieces these teens create in the After School Matters Retail Store. All proceeds from the Store go back to funding program opportunities.
Thank you, Morningstar for sharing your time and talents with our teens!
